Ten years after their breakout moment, Sports have circled back to where things started: two friends making music because they genuinely enjoy doing it together. Their new self-titled album is self-produced, self-recorded and refreshingly uncomplicated in its approach, folding the band’s familiar indie pop instincts into something a little looser and more reflective. After three records and a level of online success that could probably qualify as a full-time administrative burden, Sports sound less interested in reinvention than in sharpening what already works. The result is warm, melodic and quietly confiden. A band sounding very much like themselves, only more settled into it.
